ati radeon > firegl softmod

I am using a laptop with a mobility radeon 9600 card, but the ati drivers for it crashes the houdini aprentice edition and maya. I tried several drivers and mods from ati with no success so far. Now, it works ok under firegl softmod.
here is the thread on cgtalk about how to soft mod the ati radeon series to ati firegl series card.
